“Anne, why aren’t you in bed?”
“Oh, Aunt Mari,” Anne whispered rapturously, leaning against the window pane. “Don’t you know? On the last night of winter, The Lady in Pink tiptoes through the forest and awakens spring! The trees glow—like fireflies, but with all the loveliest shades of colors—and they dance together, every rustle of their branches part of a heavenly song!”
“I’ve never heard it,” Aunt Mari sniffed.
“That’s because the music puts everyone into the deepest slumber—.”
“Then you won’t miss anything.”
Anne sighed. “I suppose seeing can’t be much more beautiful than dreaming about it.”
As always, many thanks to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for hosting Friday Fictioneers! Stop over and read a wonderful array of 100-word-fiction pieces based on this photo prompt!
A fanciful idea, dreaming and believing the Lady in Pink awakes the spring.

A girl has to daydream every once in a while, and toss science to the wind! 🙂

Dale, you caught me! All I could think when I saw this photo was, “What would Anne see here?” She’s a bit of a hero of mine… 🙂

Fellow Anne lover, what can I say? I loved the books, I loved the version of Megan Follows and I loved Anne with an E with Amybeth McNulty. I loved how they updated the story to include the awful history in Canada done to the Indigenous peoples… ‘Course, I’m assuming you’ve seen any of these!!

I must check those out! Thanks for the recommendation.

I always thought it was because Persephone returned to the world above from the underworld.

And when I talk to science folks they have a totally different story themselves… I guess we’re still settling on the true version. 🙂

I love your fairy tale, Angela. You’re probably right about it not being more beautiful than the dream. I wish she had a way to stay awake and find out.

Agreed. It’s like all those times I tried to see the aurora when I was young…it didn’t come down this far, but I had to TRY! Maybe something will wake her in the middle of the night. Thank you for commenting!

I was picturing Anne of Green Gables as well. She’d just see something like that. This is a beautiful fantasy.

Poor Aunt Mari. She’s one of the non-dreamers who misses out on so much of the beauty of life 🙂

Me too! Part of me hope she gets wakes up during the night and peeks out the window! But sometimes dreams are best left as dreams.

At least she’ll have a beautiful dream. They’re usually better than reality, anyway.
