Follow Your Dream…

Sophie woke suddenly at 4am. In the dream, she’d been painting, then the watercolor pool came alive—but the woman floated, eerily still.

Sophie got dressed, paced, then drove to the natatorium.

“This is ridiculous,” she muttered, pulling open the locker room door. Her chest tightened. That suit, that swim cap. She recognized them.

Yanking on her swimsuit, Sophie hurried poolside. The woman was swimming. A yawning lifeguard chatted with his coworker. What could she tell him? Look, I had this dream…

She scanned the water. The swimmer was facedown, motionless.

“Help her!”

The guard sprang forward.

Sophie walked away.

As always, many thanks for Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for hosting Friday Fictioneers! (This week I suspect she also provided some of her lovely artwork for the photo prompt!) Hop over and read a wonderful array of 100-word-fiction pieces based on this photo!

    1. I want to think she made it in time! She left because she’d done all that she could do; the rest was in the hands of fate and the lifeguard.

You know, I’d envisioned this as a one-time thing, but maybe this is the beginning of a gift… Hmmmm. There are possibilities with that.

Thank you for your comment, Dale!

  1. Miraculous. So good that she acted on her dream. I like how you told this in such a down-to-earth style. Sophie’s own doubt about what’s happened gives her great authenticity, and the dramatic action of the ending is masterfully done. Within a few words we go from all being normal to a very different situation.

    1. Margaret, thank you for your wonderful comment. I’ve often wondered about situations that seem that they may be more than meets the eye, how a person would handle them without knowing for sure whether they are something important or a trick of the brain.

    1. You’re right. She wasn’t thinking about herself at all—frankly, she’d rather be in bed!—but she went out of her way to try to do the right thing. Thank you for your thoughtful comment!

  2. Great story! I’m not typically one who puts a lot of store in dreams or premonitions, but this really spoke to me. If your MC hadn’t acted on her dream—well, maybe the lifeguard will learn to be more aware!
